ATLANTA — An attempt to arrest two suspected gun runners in Dekalb County, Georgia, on Friday, turned into an intense shootout in which a 20-year veteran officer was shot.

Officer Marco Vizcarrando is in stable condition and has been allowed to return home after being shot through the shoulder by Rome Crow, 21, and Isiah McCray, 24, who were in a vehicle which police were monitoring in connection with a gun running investigation.

When a patrol car attempted to pull over Crow and McCray, they fled, but immediately crashed into a gas station sign. The men then tried to run through the gas station and began shooting at the pursuing officer on foot. Fortunately, backup was close at hand and 12 patrol cars were on the scene in no time.

Officer Vizcarrando was one of the responding officers who arrived after the shooting began, but for all the bullets fired on both sides, he was one hit. He sustained a bullet through the shoulder.

The suspects then split up, but Crow was arrested on the spot. McCray made it into the woods but was apprehended with the help of a K-9 unit.

Meanwhile, fearing officer Vizcarrando's condition could get worse, a police helicopter was used to transport him to hospital, instead of waiting for an air ambulance to arrive. Luckily, officer Vizcarrando's wound was a through-and-through, and doctors allowed him to go home the same night.
Rome Crow and Isiah McCray are charged with aggrevated assault on a police officer, and felony obstruction.
